Comet Holmes (17P) In Its Full Glory!!!
An extremely faint comet which was out of reach of even amateur telescopes has
startled everyone by showing a sudden brightening (outburst) and reaching a
brightness level easily seen by the naked eye! First observed by an English
amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes, this comet is named Comet Holmes (17P).
Incidentally, this comet had shown a similar brightening way back in 1892, over
115 years ago. According to an IAU circular it was observed this time around
from Tenerife, Canary Islands on Wednesday, 24th October.
This comet is visible even from big cities and these days is close to the
constellation Perseus and is slowly moving westward. This comet does not have
the classic comet look with a bright nucleus and a long sweeping tail. It would
look like a new star in the constellation Perseus to the naked eye, but even a
binocular would show it as a fuzzy ball.
We don’t know for how long Holmes will stay this bright, neither do we know why
it reached this amazing brightness so suddenly. One theory says it might have
broken apart while another explanation might be that it simply threw off a huge
load of gas and dust as it approached the sun and warmed up.
